It is mainly prepared from the synthesis of phenol and carbon dioxide. Modern production is obtained by the reaction of dry sodium phenol (sodium phenol salt) and carbon dioxide, which is then treated with acid.

Although low-concentrations of salicylic acid products are generally considered safe, high-concentrations of salicylic acid can cause mild chemical burns, which can also lead to dangerous poisoning if eaten by mistake, so safety should be paid attention when using it.
